The reading practice was animated. It was almost 15:45 before we started talking about backgrounds. We used the better part of an hour before we realized that Andrea’s computer would no support virtual backgrounds. At that point, we made a unanimous decision for each person to select their own jpg for a background.

  • Use any background you want as long as it is not black.
  • Wear black for the reading

Suggestions

  • Place your computer so that bright light is not behind you. Soft light behind the computer if possible so your face is lit.
  • Try to make the computer camera slightly lower than your face so that if you read your story on the computer’s screen you look as though you are reading to the audience.
  • Click the 3 vertical dots that allow you to change your name in Zoom. Enter your correct name – title of your story.
  • When you finish reading your story, say “Thank You”. This will be your signal to the person reading after you.
  • Reading commencement will be based on being available while the person before you is reading their story. When you hear the person before you read the last sentence of their story and say Thank You, Wait for 3 to 5 seconds and start your story. The screen will switch to you automatically.
  • The person posting the Intermission picture should ring a bell 2 to 5 minutes before the reading resumes.
  • The first person following intermission (Erica) just starts reading 2 to 5 minutes after the bell is rung.

Dry run

18:00 on the reading night – October 23

Everybody agreed to meet online at 18:00 before the meeting to do a brief online test of transitions. Starting with the first person reading their story’s title and last paragraph of their story ending with Thank You, and the next person automatically starting with their title and reading the last paragraph of their story and so on.

Hopefully, this will go smoothly!

The meeting finished at 17:00
